Walmart And Salvation Army Bring Joy For Christmas To The Children Of Maui

Town News

The people of Maui, Hawaii, have faced a challenging year following the devastating wildfires that swept through their community in August. However, as the holiday season approaches, a wave of kindness has emerged, spearheaded by Walmart and the Salvation Army. These organizations have come together to bring joy to the children affected by the wildfires, organizing holiday celebrations and surprise toy giveaways.

Walmart, in a heartwarming gesture, donated an impressive 35,000 toys to the children, aiming to brighten their spirits during this festive time. The generosity extended beyond the toys, as Walmart also expressed gratitude to the resilient staff who have been working tirelessly to support the community during these trying times. The staff members received Walmart gift cards, providing them with a means to enhance their holiday celebrations.

Two significant events marked this initiative. Firstly, a Christmas party was organized for the students of two elementary schools. The King Kamehameha III school, tragically destroyed by the wildfires, saw its students and staff relocated to Princess Nahi’ena’ena’s campus. The Salvation Army transformed the large gymnasium into a festive wonderland, creating a magical atmosphere for the big reveal of the 35,000 toys.

This collaborative effort between Walmart and the Salvation Army not only brought joy and excitement to 800 children but also served as a heartwarming example of community support during challenging times. The spirit of giving and compassion shone brightly as these organizations worked together to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the wildfires in Maui.

“One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was when large gift bags filled with toys were distributed to each child present at the event, which was kept under wraps, for it to be a complete surprise to the children.”

During a recent Winter Wonderland Toy Shopping Spree at a nearby Walmart store, over 1,800 children from Maui, along with their families, were given the delightful opportunity to select and take home a variety of toys without incurring any costs. This event provided a joyous and festive experience, allowing the participating families to engage in the spirit of the season while creating lasting memories. The initiative not only contributed to the happiness of the children but also fostered a sense of community and generosity, exemplifying the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

“The smiles and excitement on their faces were a testament to the love and care shared by the Lahaina community, Walmart and The Salvation Army.”
